Today, we are going to provide you an introduction to poker and its different types.

Common Terms You Need to Know

Before we give you the rules of the game, there are important terms you need to know and understand when you play poker. Here are those terms:

  • Ante: This refers to the minimum amount that you need to gamble to get into the action of the game.

  • Blinds: These are the money, which is in chip form, that are placed on the table before dealing the cards. There are two blinds, which are small and big. You also need to make sure that the money is being wagered with each hand. Blinds rotate from player to player in each deal.

  • Raise: This refers to the player’s wish to increase the table bet.

  • Call: This indicates a player’s willingness to match the raised amount when a new wager has been placed.

  • Check: This, on the other hand, indicated that a player does not wish to raise and if there’s no new wager that has been made.

How to Play Poker

On a casual game of poker, the right to deal a hand usually rotates among the players. It is marked using a token called a dealer button or buck. But in a casino, a house dealer handles the cards for each hand, and the button is rotated clockwise among the players to specify a nominal dealer to determine the order of betting. The cards are being dealt clockwise around the table one at a time.

One or more players are typically required to make forced bets. It is usually either a blind bet or an ante, or sometimes both. The dealer will shuffle the cards, then the player on the chair to his o right cuts. After that, the dealer deals a suitable number of cards to the players one at a time, starting with the player to his left. The cards can be dealt face up or face down, depending on the kind of poker being played.

After the initial deal, the first of the several betting rounds will begin. Between each round, the hands of the players develop in some way, usually by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards that were previously dealt. At the end of every round, all bets are collected into the central pot.

Any time during a betting round, the hand can end immediately if one player bets and no opponents choose to call the best, and instead, they all fold. When this happens, the bettor will be awarded the pot. There will be no cards needed to be shown, and the next hand will start. This is what makes bluffing possible in poker. It is actually a primary feature of poker which distinguishes it from other competing games.

If more than one player remains at the end of the last betting round, there will be a showdown. During a showdown, the players will reveal their previously hidden cards and assess their hands. The player with the best hand will win the pot. But this depends on the kind of poker being played. There are five cards included in a poker hand. In the kinds of poker that include more than five cards to each player, only the best five-card combination will count.

The Different Types of Poker

After knowing the basic gameplay of poker, we are going to provide you with its different variants as well. Today, when someone invites you to play poker, they generally mean Texas Hold ‘Em, which is a popular game of poker. But aside from that, poker has many other variants you can try.

The main types of poker variants are stud, draw, and community card games. Here are how each of them works:

  • Stud: In this poker variant, players are dealt a number of cards, usually 5 or 7, and they must use those original cards to make their best hand.

  • Draw: In this variant, the players can choose to trade in some of their cards, usually up to 3, to be able to improve their hand.

  • Community Card: In this type of game, the players are dealt hole cards face down. These are cards that are uniquely theirs. Then, they play off the community cards to make their best hand. They are called community cards because other players at the table may also play them off.

Aside from the main types, here are the other variants of poker you can play:

  • Texas Hold ‘Em: As mentioned above, this is the most popular poker game in the United States today, and it is played in the World Series of Poker. In this variant, players are dealt two pocket or hole cards, and then they will wait for 5 community cards to be revealed. The betting has four rounds in this game. One round is after dealing the hole cards, one after the first three community cards are revealed, one after the fourth community card is revealed, and the last one is after the fifth community card is revealed. The players need to make their best hands with any combination of 5 cards, both in their hole cards and the communal.

  • 5-Card Draw: In this variant, each player will be dealt with 5 cards. However, on the initial go around, the player can choose to trade in up to 3 cards.

  • 5-Card Stud: This is probably the simplest variant among all poker games. Each player will be given 5 cards. They need to use only those five cards to make a winning hand.

  • 7-Card Stud: In this variant, 7 cards are given to each player, 3 of them are down while 4 are up. The players need to make the best possible 5-card hand from their 7 cards.

  • 7-Card Draw: This variant has the same concept as the 5-card draw, but it has seven cards.

  • Omaha: This poker variant is similar to Texas Hold ‘Em. It can be played with 2 up to 10 players at a time. It also has four rounds of betting. The only difference is that each player is given four-hole cards, and the five community cards are revealed immediately. The players need to make their best 5-card hands using two-hole cards and three common cards.

  • Follow the Queen: This game is the same as the 7-card stud variant. But the wild card is designated to be the next exposed card after a queen is flipped. If there are no queens flipped, there are no wild cards at that hand.

  • High/Low Chicago: This is a stud game of poker that can be played for the highest hand or the lowest. In a game of High Chicago, the player who has the highest spade face-down will win half of the pot. In Low Chicago, on the other hand, the player who has the lower spade face-down will win half of the pot. The other half of the pot will be given to the player with the best hand. Therefore, if you have the best hand and the winning spade, you will receive the entire pot. You can actually add this game to other variations of poker.
